Santa Fe style homes are a pillar of their geographic roots. Just as California has Mission style homes, New Mexico adopted Santa Fe house designs. New Mexico wanted to distinguish itself from the image of California, so the development of Santa Fe house design was thought of as a method to attract tourism and promote the state’s identity. Santa Fe home plans were basically created from a mixture of Spanish, Colonial, and Indian Pueblo architecture featuring flat roofs, irregular rounded edge walls, a stucco surface and often vigas (round log ceiling beams).
