The Santa Fe style is a pillar of its geographic roots. Just as California has its Mission style, New Mexico adopted its own style called Santa Fe. New Mexico wanted to distinguish itself from the image of California, so the development of the Santa Fe home style was thought of as a method to attract tourism and promote the state’s identity. The Santa Fe style home was basically created from a mixture of Spanish Colonial and Indian Pueblo architecture featuring flat roofs, irregular rounded edge walls, a stucco surface and often vigas (round log ceiling beams).
