In the late 1860’s, Italian style homes were the most popular style in the United States. Historians say Italian style houses were favored because these homes could be built with many different materials. Plus, new technologies of the Victorian Era made it possible to quickly and inexpensively produce cast-iron and press-metal decorations. Italian style home designs have flat or low-pitched roofs, widely overhanging eaves with large decorative brackets underneath, tall narrow windows and elaborate wrap-around porches. Italian home plans dominated housing styles in America from 1850-1880 and is a common style throughout San Francisco.
