In the late 1860’s, Italian style home designs were the most popular style in the United States. Historians say they were favored because these homes could be built with many different materials. Plus, new technologies of the Victorian Era made it possible to quickly and inexpensively produce cast-iron and press-metal decorations. Italian home plans have flat or low-pitched roofs, widely overhanging eaves with large decorative brackets underneath, tall narrow windows, and elaborate wrap-around porches. These homes dominated housing styles in America from 1850-1880 and are a common style throughout San Francisco.
