Log construction is a form of timber construction where the walls of the home are constructed of tree trunks with rounded sides that are laid horizontally on top of one another. A log home or log cabin uses logs that have not been milled into conventional lumber to construct the walls and ceiling. Although log cabins have a strong association with rustic and rural North America and were first constructed beginning in 1638, historically log construction has its roots in the timber-rich regions of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The log cabin has been a symbol of humble origins in American politics since the early 19th century.
