Keeping Room

A keeping room is similar to a hearth room since it is located in an area just off the kitchen of a home and may or may have a fireplace. Keeping rooms date back to the Colonial times when families slept in that area of the home when the rest of the dwelling would be cold. Due to its close proximity to the kitchen and stove, the keeping room remained warm through most of the night. The whole idea of a keeping room is to have a place where the family can gather near the kitchen, so even though homeowners no longer sleep there, it is still a very popular place for reading, watching television, playing or keeping warm by the fire.
